What is CamCatcher?

Have you spent hours watching webcams of Hawaiian sunsets and wanted to record them easily? Well CamCatcher is just the application you need. CamCatcher is designed to retrieve images from webcams and automatically save, name, and organize them for you with unprecedented ease.

What is a 'webcam'?
A webcam is a camera that is tied to a WWW server that automatically takes a picture and posts it to the web server. It is a series of still images that update frequently - possibly anywhere from 20 seconds to 15 minutes, it is depenedent on the web site.

Quick "How-To" Guide...

Why should I register?
When you register, you will able to save unlimited images with CamCatcher. Until then you can only save 10 images per Channel.

What is a Channel and how do I 'tune in'?
A Channel is similar to a bookmark in a web browser. Though it has more information.

    A Channel contains:
  1. Name - A name you choose for the channel
  2. URL - the URL of the image that is to be monitored
  3. Refresh Rate - how frequently, in seconds, the webcam is updated
A Catcher is a process created by CamCatcher to monitor a Channel. To create a Catcher, choose a Channel from the "Channels" menu. Hit the "Open Channel" button. The Catcher will appear in the Catcher List.

How do I save files?
To save images from a Catcher, select the Catcher from the Catcher List in the Control Window. Hit the "Record" check box. Images will start to be saved out in the "Catches" directory.

How do I delete a Catcher?
Select the Catcher you would like to delete from the Catcher List. Hit the Delete Catcher"Delete Catcher" button. The Catcher will be removed from the Catcher List.

How do I create a new category in the Channels menu?
Under the File menu, choose Create New Category... and enter the name you would like call your new category. Hit "OK". Your new category should now appear in the "Channels" menu, and in the pop-up menu in the main window.

How do I put Channels in a Category?
Enter the parameters for your Channel in the Control Window. Select a category from the Category pop-up menu. Hit the Save Channel"Save Channel" button. Your Channel should now appear in the proper category in the Channels Menu. You can also move Channels to other Categories by selecting an existing Channel, change the category in the Control Window, and then hit Save Channel "Save Channel". Note, this will create a duplicate of the original Channel in the new category.

How do I change the parameters of a Channel?
Select the Channel you would like to edit from the Channels menu. Edit the Name or Refresh Rate. Hit the Save Channel"Save Channel" button. The Channel has now been updated. Important: Every URL in a Category must be unique. For the preivous example, if you changed the URL of the selected Channel, and hit the Save Channel"Save Channel", you will create a NEW Channel in that category.

How do I delete a Channel?
Select the Channel you would like to delete from the Channels menu. Hit the Delete Channel"Delete Channel" button. The Channel has now been removed.

Quick FAQ...

Q: Does CamCatcher support "live video streaming"?
A: Well, it depends what you mean by "live video streaming". Some sites use the term "live video streaming" to mean still pictures that are updated very frequently. Typically, CamCatcher will support these sites. However some sites refer to "live video" as a streaming video feed using a RealVideo or QuickTime. CamCatcher does not support those sites.

Q: Does CamCatcher support RealVideo or QuickTime Streaming?
A: No, it only supports jpeg's and gif's that are updated by the server.

Q: Does CamCatcher support password protected sites?
A: Yes and No. It is dependent on your Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Some JRE's, such as the one for the Macintosh, do support standard Web authorization allowing CamCatcher to capture images from password protected sites.
